Today's Carl Zeiss SMT AG has its roots in the copying technology used to miniaturize integrated circuit designs in the 1960s. This business was originally part of the Carl Zeiss Photo Division.
| November 2008: New resolution record Achieved with ORIONŽ Helium-ion Microscope |

2.4 Angstrom or 0.24 nanometers – with this record value, the ORIONŽ helium-ion microscope is setting a new standard for the resolution of scanning microscopes. This extreme resolution makes the system attractive for a variety of applications. For example, insulating layers in semiconductor components are partially only a few nanometers thick. On August 5, 2008, Carl Zeiss SMT (Oberkochen, Germany) and Pixer Technology Ltd. (Karmiel, Israel) signed an agreement for the acquisition of the Israeli company by SMT. The almost 30 Pixer employees develop unique yield enhancement solutions for photomasks which play a key role semiconductor production. For more information, please see the press release.

Albuquerque, New Mexico, was the Mecca of microscopy for four days in August. Twelve workshops gave visitors the opportunity to learn everything about products from Carl Zeiss SMT. Furthermore, visitors were also able to examine specimens on five demo systems – a prime opportunity to demonstrate the performance of the systems. The new products NVision 40 Argon, SIGMA, LIBRAŽ 120 PLUS and ORIONŽ PLUS attracted a great deal of interest. For more information, please visit the M&M page.

Under the motto "Win / Win through Networks in a Volatile Environment", the ten invited Supply Chain Partners and partner candidates of Carl Zeiss SMTdiscussed possible joint approaches to this subject during the Suppliers' Day on June 10. The aim of the motto is to sensitize and motivate: "The semiconductor market, a key driver of our business, operates in a very cyclical and highly competitive environment and changes at very short time intervals.

"Open for Business" - with the push of a button, Dirk Stenkamp and Frank Averdung (both of Carl Zeiss SMT) and Bernd Rinnert (Deputy Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany for New England) performed the world's first "nano ribbon cutting" ceremony to officially open the new headquarters of Carl Zeiss SMT for North America.

In the presence of around 50 guests, Carl Zeiss opened the world's first Advanced Imaging Center in Singapore on March 27.
This unique center gives customers the opportunity to experience and test the entire ZEISS product line – from micro to nano, which is also reflected in the theme for the event: A journey from the micro to the nanocosmos.
