Biological samples like cells, soft tissue, bones, fungi and many more typically charge up in the SEM and often require complex sample preparation techniques. The ORION® PLUS helium ion microscope (HIM) has the ability to image these samples in backscattered ion mode - eliminating the need for time-consuming sample preparation. In addition, the helium ions are so light that they do not damage the sample like a gallium ion FIB tool would.
Another significant advantage of the HIM is its unparalleled depth of focus (DOF). Many life science applications require tremendous DOF. The helium ion microscope, because of its inherently simple optics design, has a depth of focus more than 5 times larger than a typical scanning electron microscope, allowing you to see more of your sample in focus at the same time.
