| BERLIN/Germany, JENA/Germany, 18.12.2009. Carl Zeiss has received an order for a powerdomeŽVELVET digital full-dome projection system from the Wilhelm Foerster Observatory in Berlin. The system is to be installed in the ZEISS Planetarium in the summer of 2010 and will supplement the opto-mechanical planetarium projector from Carl Zeiss which has been making the stars glow in the 20-meter dome since 1965. “We put our trust in German quality and proven engineering know-how and have therefore once again opted for Carl Zeiss,” is how Rolf Preuschmann, First Chairman in the Society of the Wilhelm Foerster Observatory, explains the reasoning behind the purchase. With VELVET, the Berlin Planetarium will receive the leading technology for the projection of full-dome images. The special feature of the projectors developed by Carl Zeiss is the image contrast ratio of 2.5 million to one – the highest contrast currently possible with digital projectors anywhere in the world. As a result, the dome projection achieves outstanding brilliance and sharpness. In Berlin, eight VELVET projectors will be integrated, generating eight partial images. These are combined so that a complete image measuring 360 degrees by 180 degrees is obtained without any visible transitions or image edges. On a dome surface measuring 630 square meters planetarium visitors experience a projection image that almost completely surrounds them – a surface almost twice as big as even the biggest movie screens in Berlin. Digital full-dome projection not only allows the direct integration of new media into the planetarium presentations, but it also broadens the program spectrum offered. However, the night sky and the laws of the universe continue to be the main focal points of the shows. In addition to full-dome films which impressively dramatize subjects from the worlds of astronomy and space travel, the live presentation of celestial phenomena and current events remain the center of attraction. For this purpose, Carl Zeiss integrates the special “powerdome” computer system with a live control panel that combines the traditional planetarium with digital projectors. This makes a wide variety of different effects possible. Instead of only a selection, all constellations are now visible. Planets can be zoomed into view and their phases correctly displayed. Their motions leave visible orbits in the sky. The new full-dome projection system supports the educational tasks performed by the Wilhelm Foerster Observatory since its founding in 1947. The step to full-dome projection is an investment in successful education of the future. ![]() A powerdomeŽVELVET digital full-dome projection system from Carl Zeiss is to be installed in the ZEISS Planetarium of the Wilhelm Foerster Observatory in Berlin in the summer of 2010.
