| JENA/Germany, 29.06.2009. The INTRABEAM® intraoperative radiotherapy system is becoming increasingly established as a gentle alternative to the radiotherapy currently used to treat breast cancer. Leading scientists and doctors confirm the benefits of the system. It is already being used by approximately 10% of all certified breast centers in Germany. Breast cancer is the most common form of the disease in women. Today’s treatment standard is the breast-conserving removal of the tumor in combination with external, 6-week radiotherapy. It is used in 70-80% of all cases of breast cancer, but leads to high radiation exposure of healthy tissue. With the INTRABEAM from Carl Zeiss, the radiotherapy procedure is performed during the surgery, and the affected tissue in the tumor bed is irradiated from the inside. This protects the surrounding healthy tissue, is less aggressive and therefore offers a clear treatment benefit to patients. A further advantage: the time required for the therapy is also reduced. With this pioneering product, Carl Zeiss is setting a new milestone on the road to a personalized, gentle and simultaneously effective treatment method for breast cancer. In the words of Prof. Dr. Frederik Wenz, Director of the University Hospital for Radiotherapy and Radio-oncology in Mannheim (Germany): “The intraoperative boost with INTRABEAM and the subsequent shorter external irradiation have been backed up by solid clinical data. This application has therefore been incorporated as an option in the Practical Guidelines of the German Radio- oncology Society (DEGRO).” Dr. Michael Kaschke, President and CEO of Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, emphasized: “After the long development time required for INTRABEAM, we are now introducing a breast therapy system that offers patients treatment benefits verified by numerous clinical data – and now also confirmed by leading scientists and practicing doctors.” Eva Sesselmann Director Corporate Communications Carl Zeiss Meditec AG Phone: +49 3641 220-331 Fax: +49 3641 220-112 E-Mail: Patrick Kofler Director Investor Relations Carl Zeiss Meditec AG Phone: +49 3641 220-106 Fax: +49 3641 220-117 Email: Number: 0116-2009-ENG OP Number of Words: 328 Number of Characters: 2283 |
