Carl Zeiss SMT and Cymer launch a joint venture to market innovative FPD manufacturing systems

July 19th, 2005 sees the launch of TCZ GmbH, a joint venture between Carl Zeiss SMT and Cymer Inc. (San Diego, California). Cymer, the world market leader in excimer lasers for photolithography, SMT's Laser Optics division and Carl Zeiss' Industrial Metrology Group have jointly developed a manufacturing system that can improve the quality of flat panel displays (FPDs) and reduce their manufacturing costs. TCZ (which stands for "Team Cymer Zeiss") will market the new manufacturing systems worldwide and further develop the process, known as Thin Beam Directional X’tallization (TDX).

The process improves the crystal structure of the extremely thin layer of silicon on a display's glass plate. This enables the production of integrated circuits directly on displays, and thus helps reduce production costs. In addition, display characteristics such as resolution, color representation and energy consumption can be enhanced.
