The Akashi Planetarium was established in 1960, commemorating the International Geophysical Year of 1957 through 1958. Here various models, materials and the planetarium offer to the visitors knowledge of time, time measurement and the universe.
In 1995 the heavy Kobe earthquake did also affect the neighbouring Akashi City. The planetarium building partially was damaged and had to be closed for some years. The Universal Projection Planetarium actually did not take notice of the earthquake – it has been operational.
