The first Stuttgart star theater opened its doors in May 1928. Hundreds of thousands marveled at the starry sky before the planetarium suffered destruction in the chaos of war in 1943.
Generous donations by the Carl Zeiss Foundation, other notable companies and many Stuttgart citizens made it possible to build a new planetarium. The architect Wilfried Beck-Erlang designed a building in the shape of a stepped pyramid. After two years of construction, the planetarium went into operation on April 22nd, 1977.
Today, the Stuttgart planetarium is one of the most frequented in Germany. Among its diverse kinds of programs, public astronomy shows rank first. A show remains on the program for about two months before it is replaced by a new one. Interested people can also attend theoretical and practical astronomy courses and seminars.
A new projection dome and the Mark IX UNIVERSARIUM have been built in in 2001.
