The first planetarium projector was a present made to the City of Wolfsburg in 1978 by Volkswagen on the occasion of the city's 40th anniversary.
Over a time of 13 years, the first Spacemaster projection machine was used in roughly 10,000 shows attended by 650,000 people. In the mid-nineties, the city fathers decided in favor of a modernization, with a new projection machine permitting modern forms of presentation. This luckily coincided with the creation by Carl Zeiss of a new generation of planetariums for medium-sized domes, featuring fiber-optic projection. On October 16th, 1996, visitors saw the premiere show with the first STARMASTER. At the beginning of 2010 the optical-mechanical projection system was supplemented by the Carl Zeiss powerdomeŽVELVET fulldome system.
