... Bochum Has One of the Most Modern Planetariums in Germany?
Did you know that Bochum has one of the most modern planetariums in Germany? What comes to mind when you think of the German city of Bochum? There is an album from Herbert Grönemeyer, a soccer club, the musical Starlight Express and it is a European Capital of Culture. But did you know that Bochum is also home to one of the largest planetariums in Germany. It features a 20 meter dome and attracts 130,000 visitors annually. It reopens in April with a new attraction: the VELVET digital projection system from Carl Zeiss. VELVET is the leading digital technology for dome projection and offers unparalleled brilliance and clarity.

VELVET complements the traditional UNIVERSARIUM star projector. It enables the integration of movies about astronomy and space travel, as well as many new special effects directly in the presentations. Planets can be shown in close up, their phases correctly displayed and their movement can be shown as visible tracks in the sky. Additionally, all constellations can now be seen at the same time. The video projection superimposes the optical night sky without destroying its brilliance. For the first time, astronomical objects such as gas nebulae and galaxies appear to be embedded in the pitch-black depths of space.

The Wolfsburg planetarium will begin showing even more impressive images of space beginning in March. The Wilhelm-Foerster Observatory in Berlin will follow shortly thereafter.
